Once it
was pennies, now it is trash the GHS Robotics team
is searching for from the citizens of Hunt County.
Recycling old phones, printer ink and toner
cartridges is their latest fund-raising effort for
the nationally ranked robotics team.
"We
found a company that will allow students to recycle
these things and then pay us for their efforts,"
said Beth McClellen, GHS senior. "It really is
a win-win situation for everyone. Most of the
times clubs and organizations have to sell something
in order to raise money. This time we are just
helping people clean up their offices."
While
most offices normally throw out their printer
cartridges, the GHS students will provide boxes for
saving the throw-aways and will stop by on a regular
basis to collect the items.
Cell
phones can be dropped in the boxes, also and the
students can recycle those.
"It
seems about every two years, someone gets a new and
improved phone. We can take those old cell
phones and recycle them. No phone is too old
or too broken for us to recycle," added McClellen.
Money
raised will help pay for the expenses of competition
for the team. This year the group will be
involved in BEST, Boosting Engineering and Science
Technology. A fall competition with small
robots built through a student-only effort. In
the spring, the team hits regional and national
competition, with their Lone Star entry in the FIRST
competition.
Anyone
wanting to be a part of this recycling fund-raising
program can contact the team coach, Vanessa Pope, at
903-457-2609. Students will be distributing
flyers and making contacts to local businesses
throughout this next week.
Any
business or individual wanting to set up a regular
program or a recycling day with the team should
contact the group at GHS.
"We are
planning a recycling day in October, and we are
going to encourage everyone to pick that day to stop
by and meet the team and drop off their items.
We will gladly come to some of the larger companies
in Greenville and be on the parking lots when people
are leaving work to accept their donations," added
McClellen.
