E-Systems Honors U.S. FIRST Participants
May 1994
E-Systems Communicator
Greenville Division engineers and students from
Greenville High School and Dallas Christian, who had
participated in the 1994 US FIRST competition, were
honored at a festive dinner in April. The
dinner was held in the E-Systems Recreation Hall,
which was decorated with silver mylar and red, white
and blue balloons.
Harold
Don Smith, vice president, engineering, acted as
emcee.
Tony
Norman, lead engineer on the project, showed a video
of the action during the competition and during the
trip to Nashua, N.H., where the competition was
held.
Senior
Vice President Brian Cullen received photos of the
groups, which were presented by sponsors from the
schools.
Tony
presented the schools with replicas of the goals
used in the competition. In accepting for
their schools, Principals Mike Barnes, of Dallas
Christian and James Fuller, of Greenville High
School, praised the engineers for their positive
influence on the students, and the Greenville
Division for its sponsorship of the program, which,
it was later learned, is to be held at Disney World
next year.
Vanessa
Pope, teacher/sponsor from Greenville High School,
credited the engineers with succeeding where she had
failed to interest her students in engineering,
which is often erroneously perceived as being dull.
Some who had previously shown no interest in the
field, have decided to go into engineering, now that
they know it can be fun.
Kathy
Sorrells, teacher/sponsor from Dallas Christian,
said, "In 15 years of teaching, I had not been able
to generate the interest in engineering and
scientific field of study like two years of
association with E-Systems engineers. The
benefits are far-reaching.
Harold
Smith presented each participant in the competition
with a glass paperweight etched with U.S. First,
E-Systems, Greenville High Schools and Dallas
Christian logos. |
